Every year we set goals in order to move forward in our lives, whether they are health goals, business goals, or personal development goals. We are told to use S.M.A.R.T goals: specific, measurable, attainable, relevant, and time-bound. We write them down, setting a completion date, and then barely make it through a week of working on our goal before feeling overwhelmed and giving up on achieving it altogether.
What is Missing in Our Goal Setting?
For many years I followed the same pattern. I would start the year setting goals and soon fail, hating myself in the process. I made every excuse in the book: my family needed me to cook, clean and run the errands, my house required extensive repairs, my garden called out for attention. In particular, my special needs son demanded a great deal of my attention. I didn’t yet realize the main block that was preventing me from attaining my goals: my lack of BELIEF in MYSELF.
Develop Belief in Yourself
Before you write your first goal, you need to change your mind about yourself. We all live in a comfort zone of our own making. Our daily habits guide us through our lives, waking up, driving to work, eating the same lunch day after day. We go through the motions of daily living and let our dreams pass us by. Eventually we become disillusioned and lose hope that we can achieve our goals.
Take the First Step
Take the first step right now to change the way you think. Pull out a sheet of paper or personal journal and your favorite pen ( I admit it makes me happy to use a colored sharpy) and number the page from 1 to 50. Then write 50 things that bring you joy. These can be people, places, memories, events or even scents. Write anything at all that makes you happy! If this activity this makes you roll your eyes, perhaps you need it the most. I’ll be posting my own list here on my blog. Be sure to comment and let me know some of yours.
This is the first of a series based on my personal journey through Deidre Hughey’s book The Bold Factor: Goal Setting to Ignite Your Life and Get What You Want! If you are interested in making a difference in your life and the lives of others I highly recommend it!
