Congratulations on taking your first step toward a healthier life!
Why Do We Need to Drink Water?
Many health problems can occur simply through not drinking enough water, and yet a significant number of people are failing to drink enough water to remain hydrated.
Water is needed by every cell in our body in order to function properly. It is needed by every organ of the body, but in particular the kidneys in order to release toxins and waste products. water is used to lubricate the joints, protect the spinal cord and other sensitive tissues, regulate body temperature and assist the passage of food through the intestines.
Although we can get some of the water through foods with a high water content- most of our water is from beverages. Sadly, most of us drink high sugar juices, sodas and caffeinated drinks through the day. Most of these drinks are dehydrating, which counteracts any hydrating benefits.
How Much Water Should We Drink?
Often you will hear that we need to be drinking 8 glasses of water a day, or the number of ounces in one half our weight (in lbs). Our need for water actually varies according to our weight, our exercise level, and the climate, among other factors.
I like using a Hydration Calculator to get a more specific amount I need in my own daily life. Another thing I like to do is “bookend” my day with a tall glass of water- one when I first wake up and one before I go to bed.
