What is Hepasil DTX™?

You may have heard of the importance of glutathione for detoxification.  However, glutathione itself is not absorbed intact very efficiently. One of the best ways to increase glutathione levels is to provide the building blocks and precursors needed to manufacture it within the body.

Hepasil DTX™ Increases both Antioxidant and Detoxification Capacity

USANA scientists conducted a double-blind, placebo controlled study to show that a specific combination of ingredients promotes increases in natural antioxidant defense and detoxification mechanisms by increasing plasma glutathione and vitamin C. It happens largely through a process called cell signaling.
Glutathione is the most abundant antioxidant in our bodies and plays a major role in the detoxification process. Unfortunately, glutathione absorption is very inefficient and it must be synthesized in the body. During times of stress the body increases glutathione by upregulating the Phase II enzymatic machinery. Several phytochemicals including broccoli extract, milk-thistle, and alpha-lipoic acid are known to upregulated Phase II enzymes and thus glutathione levels.
Vitamin C is an important first line of defense in protecting biomolecules from oxidative damage, especially in circulation, and may play a role in detoxification. However, vitamin C levels in the body are tightly regulated, and until recently it was not known that vitamin C could be increased by certain phytochemicals even in the absence of vitamin C supplementation.

Study Highlights

• Hepasil DTX increased plasma glutathione 2 hours following the first treatment and significantly increased plasma glutathione 8 hours after supplementation.
• Plasma glutathione levels increased 74% by the end of the study.
• Hepasil DTX significantly increased plasma vitamin C as soon as 2 hours following the first treatment and was maintained during the entire AcutePhase (0-8 hour time points)
This was the first study to show that the combination of these nutrients and phytochemicals can synergistically boost both glutathione and vitamin C levels, simultaneously. Taken together, these results show that the recommended dosage of Hepasil DTX is able to boost both glutathione and vitamin C levels, and up-regulate the molecular machinery needed to utilize glutathione in detoxification reactions and significantly increase the body’s antioxidant capacity.
In a follow-up study (link #2), USANA scientists showed that the increases in both glutathione and vitamin C translated into a clinical benefit by showing that subjects taking Hepasil DTX were significantly more resistant to oxidative damage than subjects taking the placebo.
